If you have ever had a sick child (who hasn't?) then you know that taking their temperature can be a task in itself. I know that my Danika hates having her temperature taken and is such a squirmy wiggle worm it is hard to obtain one. When we went to Danika's clinic visits they had a great TemporalScanner they just swiped across her forehead and took her temp. It was over before she knew what was happening. Well I have great news! Exergen has a TemporalScanner for all of us moms and dads to use at home! I was excited to try it out and see how easy it was to use.
The Exergen TemporalScanner works to measure the body temperature by taking a reading from the temporal artery. It is more accurate than oral, rectal, axillary (under the arm) and ear. It is also the least invasive way to take a temperature. If it is accurate enough to use in a clinical setting I trust that it is accurate enough to use in my own home!
The Exergen TemporalScanner was also very easy to use. You simply place the probe on the center of the forehead, press and hold the scan button and lightly slide the thermometer to either the left or right side and stop at the hairline. You release the button and the temperature is displayed. Pretty easy! Below is a video of me taking Danika's temperature. It is short and sweet, just like the process of using the TemporalScanner. You can buy the Exergen TemporalScanner at Toys R Us, Babies R Us, Costco, Walgreens, Sams Club, Shopper's Drug Mart and Wal Mart. You can also purchase them online at several locations. You can find a list of retailers here. There is also a special promotion here for a $5 rebate on your Temporal Scanner! The retail price varies but they are around $30, which is a great price for such an accurate, convenient thermometer.
Win! Exergen is giving one reader their own TemporalScanner!

I leanred that you Slide the thermometer in a reasonably straight line across the forehead, midway between the eyebrows and the upper hairline, and not down the side of the face. Midway on the forehead area, the temporal artery is less than 2 millimeters below the skin surface, but down the side of the face, it is much deeper and less accurately measured. amsbolda@hotmail.com

I learned this: What is the technology?
Patented infrared technology has led to the development of small, durable, infrared scanners that calibrate the arterial heat balance (AHB). One sensor measures the arterial temperature on the patient's skin, capturing the peak reading, while another sensor measures ambient. Since ambient temperature has a direct effect on skin temperature, the thermometer automatically measures both many times per second — and uses a patented algorithm to automatically adjust the correct AHB equation.

It also says Arterial temperature is the same temperature as the blood flowing from the heart. It is the best determinate of body temperature.

I learned: A major reason ear thermometers are considered inaccurate by medical professionals is because the positioning of the probe in the ear canal is inconsistent, thus creating inconsistent readings and frequently missing fevers.

I learned that this thermometer is one of the top 5 things doctors recommend you to have on hand for your childs cold needs. Also a cool mist vaporizer. I definitely would love to have this since I do daycare and usually have 6 kiddos in my home.

I learned:
Measure only the side of the head that is exposed. Any covering, hair, hat, etc. will prevent the heat from dissipating, and would cause the reading to be falsely high. This also applies if one side of the head is into a pillow.

The temporal artery is connected to the heart via the carotid artery, directly leading from the aorta, the main trunk of the arterial system. It offers constant blood flow. It is the only such artery positioned close enough to the skin surface to provide access needed to take an accurate measurement. It is easy to use because it is ideally located at the front portion of the forehead. The TemporalScanner is easier and gentler to use than other types of measurement devices such as oral, rectal, underarm and in-ear thermometers because it is truly non-invasive.

I learned that the Temporal Scanner has patented software, providing arterial heat balance. The process determines temperature by measuring the balance between the tissues warming from arterial blood and tissues cooling caused by heat loss to the environment.

I never knew that drs. say that to get the most accurate temp, you need a major artery. With the exergen thermometer, you can do this, using the temporal artery. it's amazing the technology available to us as moms, to help care for our children!

I learned that the arterial temperature is the most accurate and consistent when one is sick. This would be such a blessing, as we currently use the underarm method to take my 1.5 year old's temp, and it appears that this is not the best way! Thanks.
First it scans like a video camera, capturing naturally emitted infrared heat from the arterial blood supply at about 1000 “frames” per second, locking in the highest temperature it senses.
