Organizing Your Coupons

Wednesday, April 22, 2009 0
Couponing 101: Part 2
Organizing Your Coupons

Now that you have begun collecting all of these coupons what are you supposed to do with them? I think that organizing your coupons is key to getting the most use and the best deals out of them. You must have them filed by category to ensure that next time you are at the store and see something you need on sale or clearance you can grab your coupon and get the best deal. I can't tell you how many times I have run to the store and not brought my coupons along thinking I will not need them because I only have to buy a certain product that I do not have a coupon for and then I find some great deal that I know I have a coupon at home for and miss out!

So the lesson is Always bring your coupons in the store! Like I said organization is key. Everyone thinks differently and different methods work best for different people; do what works for you.

I started out using a plastic shoe box size container and put envelopes with recipe card headers on them. I put my coupons in each envelope by category. As I have gotten into couponing more I outgrew this method.

What I am currently using is a bag with straps (which makes it easy to bring into the store) that has plastic file dividers in it. I put my major categories on the file tabs i.e; Store coupons, Grocery, Health, Beauty, Children, Other.

Inside each file section I have smaller envelopes that I made with construction paper for more specific categories. For example in my Grocery file section I have envelopes for Produce, Juice, Canned Goods, Quick Meals, Bakery, Frozen Foods etc... I try and file them in the order my grocery store is laid out to make it quick and easy.

Other methods I have heard of are to use a binder and get baseball card or photo inserts and put your coupons in them. I have also heard of people who simply file their inserts by date, however this process may be quicker in the short term but you will be left scanning through inserts to find the coupon you want.
You need to do what works for you. I hope this post has got you thinking of ideas that will help you organize your coupons!
If you have any questions feel free to comment and I will reply!

Summer is Coming and So is the Sun!

With summer just around the corner and the sun finally poking its head out it is time to think about protecting our children from sunburn and harmful UV rays. Visit UV Skinz to stock up on swim shirts for baby, kids and adults. This is a great product and being a Registered Nurse I can attest to the importance of protecting your whole family from dangerous UV rays.

Unfortunately 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer, but with this great product we can reduce that number.

Another benefit of the UPF 50+ swim shirts is that you don't have to expose your babies and children to sunscreen. Many children are very sensitive to it and recent studies have shown it to affect hormone production as well as react with sunlight to produce free radicals that can lead to cancer.

Here is the best part, during the month of May every order placed will receive a FREE UPF 50+ baby skinz swim shirt. The intent is to pay forward the favor and pass it on to a baby who wouldn't otherwise have one. This way we can all play a part in protecting kids from skin cancer!

So head on over to UV Skinz and check out their wonderful products! And stay tuned in the coming months for a possible review and giveaway!

Make your own Triple Paste Diaper Cream!

Saturday, April 18, 2009 13
I don't know about you but we go through a lot of diaper cream in our house. Especially when my daughter is teething we notice her bottom gets red VERY easily. One product I tried that worked the best was Triple Paste. The price however was not working very well for me. The cheapest I could find it was $18.99 a tub at Target. So I set out to make my own. With a little research I have found a combination that works better than the Triple Paste. Here is the recipe:

Mix: 1/2 C Vaseline (store brand is cheapest unless you have a coupon)
1/2 tube of Desitin or other creamy diaper cream
2 Tbsp cornstarch
2 Tbsp Mylanta liquid (again unless you have a coupon the store brand is cheapest)

Stir together until creamy. If it seems a little too liquidy I add a little more Desitin.
Apply at every diaper change until rash is completely gone.
Store in an airtight container for later use.
Hope this works as good for you as it does for my little girl!
You may also wonder the cost comparison. Here it is:

Large tub of store brand Vaseline $2.99
Target brand desitin $1.79
Mylanta on clearance $1.59
Cornstarch small container .99

This is all assuming you have no coupons it would cost $7.36

After you made one batch you would still have all of your ingredients left to make another. After the second batch you would need more desitin but would still have the other ingredients.

So I would say it costs well below $3.00 a batch compared to $18.99 for Triple Paste.

Now assuming you do use coupons as I do, This is what I paid:

Vaseline $2.99-used $3 Register Reward at Walgreens
=Free

Desitin on clearance at Target for $2.54
-$1 Target coupon
-$1 Desitin coupon
=.54

Cornstarch was in my cupboard

Mylanta on clearance at Walgreens for $1.59
-$2 ES coupon
=Better than free
My final cost: $.54!

I received these four gift cards in the mail the other day. You can get these also by completing trial offers for free gift cards. It takes some organization but it is definitely worth it. Walgreens Deals Trip 4/13

My Walgreens Trip Today

I took a very quick trip to Walgreens today while my teething toddler was napping and hubby was home. Had I spent more time splitting my transactions and using more saved up Register Rewards my out of pocket expense would have been less, but I just didn't have time today. However I still got great deals. Here is how I did it:

when you buy 3 you get a $3 Register Reward (RR)
=3/$7
-(3) $1 off coupon from 4/5 insert

I used two of my saved up RR that were $3 each and a $3.21 gift card balance leaving my out of pocket expense at:

Total Savings: $71.92!

I'll be going back this week to roll my RR back and forth. There are lots of good RR deals going on now! Just remember you can't roll RR on the same item, they must be from different companies. Have questions on how to do this deal? E-mail me at thriftyminnesotamama@hotmail.com

Healthy, Natural Teething Soother

Have a teething toddler?

My daughter is teething and one of the best things to soothe her gums (and her favorite thing) is gumming frozen cantaloupe. How to:

Buy a ripe cantaloupe and slice in small chunks
Freeze chunks
Place chunks in "feeder" (mesh bag attached to handle-sold at Target among other places)
=Instant teething relief!

My daughter loves these and not only do they soothe her gums they are healthy also!

Target Coupon Policy

I know occasionally people have problems using both a manufacturer coupon and a store coupon together so I am including Target's coupon policy in my post so you can be informed. You may obtain a copy by e-mailing Target. Visit their site for contact info

Coupons are a great way to save even more when shopping at Target, and we make it easy to use them at our stores. But because of the variety of coupons available to our guests, we do have some guidelines for how coupons can be redeemed at Target:

We accept two kinds of coupons: Target-issued coupons and manufacturer-issued coupons.

We'll accept one Target coupon and one manufacturer coupon for the same item, unless either coupon prohibits it.

We can't give cash back if the face value of a coupon is greater than the purchase value of the item; in that case, we'll adjust the value of the coupon to equal the price of the item.

We can't accept coupons from other retailers, or coupons for products not carried in our stores.

All valid coupons should be presented to the cashier at the time of sale.

Have questions or want more information about using coupons at Target? Check with a Guest Services Team Leader at your Target store. You can also give us a call at (800) 440-0680, or visit us on Target.com. Either way, we're here to help!

Also, We've established our policy as one way guests may expect value and low prices on all our merchandise. Target doesn't price match with other competitor stores. Target prices can vary between stores and our Web site because of the market value of the item. I'm sorry for any inconvenience or disappointment this may have caused.

We're always looking for ways to make the Target experience better for every guest. As a result, I'll make sure to share your comments with our Store Operations team.

Thanks for shopping with us. We'll see you soon at Target."

Couponing 101: Getting Started

Wednesday, April 8, 2009 0
Getting Started
Where to find coupons and build your stash
Finding coupons:
The most obvious place to find coupons is to buy the Sunday paper. Many people ask if it is worth spending money on coupons. In my opinion, Yes it is. If I spend $2 on a Sunday paper and save $50-$100 it is well worth my $2 investment. That said I don't spend more than $6 a week on papers. If I know there will be lots of inserts, such as the first Sunday of the month, I will buy 3 papers.
The second place to find papers is your local recycling bins. I know some people are very opposed to "dumpster diving", however recycling bins are usually very clean and you can just pull out the coupon inserts. It's amazing how many people just throw them away.
You can also check local coffee shops where people buy papers to read and leave them on the table. You may want to ask the owner if you can leave a newspaper recycling box there and tell them you will regularly come and empty it free of charge. This works in your favor and theirs.
Another great source is friends and family. Tell everyone to save any coupons they won't use for you.
You can also find coupons on ebay, however I would only buy them off there if it is a really great deal that will save you a lot of money.
You can also visit craigslist.org or freecycle.org and place want ads for coupons.
These are several ways to get you well on your way to building up a nice stash of coupons!
In my next post I will talk about organizing your coupons.

My new blog

Hello! This is my very first posting and I am overwhelmed by where to begin. I have been a follower of several money saving blogs but I have had a hard time finding any that originate or focus on Minnesota. I live in northern Minnesota and I find that I cannot find coupon match ups for Super One Foods grocery store and that a lot of the prices listed on other blogs are higher up here. So in response to this I have decided to try and fill the void. Hopefully I have not taken on too much! I am not perfect and I am still learning myself so this will be a new adventure for me. Stay tuned as I learn about blogging and continually add to my site!
