I Have Found the Easiest Way to Take Your Child's Temperature! Exergen Temporal Scanner Review & Giveaway!

If you have ever had a sick child (who hasn't?) then you know that taking their temperature can be a task in itself. I know that my Danika hates having her temperature taken and is such a squirmy wiggle worm it is hard to obtain one. When we went to Danika's clinic visits they had a great TemporalScanner they just swiped across her forehead and took her temp. It was over before she knew what was happening. Well I have great news! Exergen has a TemporalScanner for all of us moms and dads to use at home! I was excited to try it out and see how easy it was to use.
The Exergen TemporalScanner works to measure the body temperature by taking a reading from the temporal artery. It is more accurate than oral, rectal, axillary (under the arm) and ear. It is also the least invasive way to take a temperature. If it is accurate enough to use in a clinical setting I trust that it is accurate enough to use in my own home!

The Exergen TemporalScanner was also very easy to use. You simply place the probe on the center of the forehead, press and hold the scan button and lightly slide the thermometer to either the left or right side and stop at the hairline. You release the button and the temperature is displayed. Pretty easy! Below is a video of me taking Danika's temperature. It is short and sweet, just like the process of using the TemporalScanner.

You can buy the Exergen TemporalScanner at Toys R Us, Babies R Us, Costco, Walgreens, Sams Club, Shopper's Drug Mart and Wal Mart. You can also purchase them online at several locations. You can find a list of retailers here. There is also a special promotion here for a $5 rebate on your Temporal Scanner! The retail price varies but they are around $30, which is a great price for such an accurate, convenient thermometer.

Monday, June 29, 2009 474

Jack and Lily provides a true soft soled shoes that can be used both indoors and outdoors. You will find a wide variety of styles and sizes for both babies and toddlers that will fit any occasion and season.

I love that they are so flexible and allow my child's foot to flex naturally while she grows and learns to walk. (which by the way she is finally walking!)

We tried the Sandal in Pink. Aren't they adorable? They arrived in such a cute box as well. They would bring lots of oohs and aahs at a baby shower! Danika had no trouble walking around in them either, although they are still a little big. The My Shoes feature suede lining, cushioned skid resistant leather-rubber soles and padded ankles for extra protection and comfort. They have a velcro closure which makes it quick and easy to put them on squirmy feet.

Jack and Lily offers over 70 stylish designs for babies and toddlers! You will definitely want to check them out here! You can buy Jack and Lily shoes on their site as well as several retail locations you can find here. The Pink Sandal we reviewed retails for $30. Shoes average in price anywhere from $26 to $36.

How to make your own Triple Paste Diaper Cream

Thursday, June 25, 2009 4
I have posted my diaper cream recipe previously but I thought I would post it again as it is truly the best and only diaper cream we use anymore. Let me know what you think!

I don't know about you but we go through a lot of diaper cream in our house. Especially when my daughter is teething we notice her bottom gets red VERY easily. One product I tried that worked the best was Triple Paste. The price however was not working very well for me. The cheapest I could find it was $18.99 a tub at Target. So I set out to make my own. With a little research I have found a combination that works better than the Triple Paste. Here is the recipe:

Mix:
1/2 C Vaseline (store brand is cheapest unless you have a coupon)
1/2 tube of Desitin or other creamy diaper cream
2 Tbsp cornstarch
2 Tbsp Mylanta liquid (again unless you have a coupon the store brand is cheapest)

Stir together until creamy. If it seems a little too liquidy I add a little more Desitin.
Apply at every diaper change until rash is completely gone.
Store in an airtight container for later use.

Hope this works as good for you as it does for my little girl!

You may also wonder the cost comparison. Here it is:

Large tub of store brand Vaseline $2.99
Target brand desitin $1.79
Mylanta on clearance $1.59
Cornstarch small container .99

This is all assuming you have no coupons it would cost $7.36
After you made one batch you would still have all of your ingredients left to make another. After the second batch you would need more desitin but would still have the other ingredients. So I would say it costs well below $3.00 a batch compared to $18.99 for Triple Paste.
Now assuming you do use coupons as I do, This is what I paid:

Vaseline $2.99-used $3 Register Reward at Walgreens
=Free

Desitin on clearance at Target for $2.54
-$1 Target coupon
-$1 Desitin coupon
=.54

Cornstarch was in my cupboard

Mylanta on clearance at Walgreens for $1.59
-$2 ES coupon
=Better than free

My final cost: $.54!

Adorable and functional Babysoy Hoodie. Wild Dill Review, Giveaway and Coupon Code!

Tuesday, June 23, 2009 282

I love Wild Dill! They offer so many adorable clothes as well as toys, gift sets, bedding, towels and so much more. We tried the Babysoy Reversible Hoodie in Blossom. It is available in 3 colors and is made of 50% Soybean fiber and 50% cotton. I love that it is completely reversible, blossom color on one side and brown on the other. One great thing about reversible hoodies is that I can order them in a slightly bigger size and roll the sleeves. Because they are reversible the sleeves are adorable when rolled and they don't show visible seams. This makes it a great investment because not only can she wear it longer, it also is two different colors for double the look. We can make several different adorable outfits with one hoodie.

I think the Babysoy hoodie looks adorable in both colors. You can buy the Babysoy hoodie here for $28. Another great thing about reversible hoodies is that if your child makes a mess on their shirt you can just turn it inside out and have a clean shirt!

Wild Dill also has some adorable dresses. I am in love with the Kate Quinn Organics Dress pictured below. They also offer very cute clothes for boys as well like the Fig Organics Pants pictured below.

Check out their wide selection of fun toys here. They have a Clementine Organic Play Dough Art Kit, Puzzles, Imagination box Cottage and much more.

My readers can get 15% off by entering code: Thrifty15 at checkout!

I do believe I have found the softest crib sheet in the world! Bamboosa Review & Giveaway!

Monday, June 22, 2009 435

I tried out a fitted crib sheet from Bamboosa and oh my goodness it is by far the softest crib sheet Danika has ever had! I would like one for my bed! Bamboosa crib sheets are made of 100% Viscose from Organic Bamboo and they come in 5 great colors. I was also impressed with how the package arrived. It was wrapped in tissue and when you opened it there was a cute twine around the sheet. We tried out the pale pink to match Danika's oh so pink room. I put them on her bed at bedtime and put her in to try it out. It was hilarious because she sat on the sheet and rubbed her hand over it and said "nice". She does this when she pets our dog and runs her hand over his fur. Apparently she also liked to run her hand over the soft crib sheet. How funny is that? Bamboosa crib sheets are thermal regulating and odor resistant to make for a cozy, cool night's sleep all summer long! They are also machine washable and dryable which is a must for me.

Danika is also wearing the BambooBaby Socks in pale pink. I just had to try them out on her because they stated they have a reputation of being the "only socks to stay on baby's feet". My Danika is a pro at taking off her socks and I put these BambooBaby socks on and at the end of the night I had to take them off! That's a first! She inevitably is missing at least one if not both socks by bedtime, but these socks sure did stay on her little tootsies. They come in four adorable colors and sell for $6 each. These are also super soft and comfy!

Bamboosa also offers BambooBaby Hooded Towels. They say they are highly absorbent, fast drying and super soft. From what I have seen of their crib sheets and socks I would love to wrap up in one of their towels as well. The BambooBaby Hooded Towels sell for $30 and come in 4 colors.

Bamboosa also offers many other products such as soaps and adult products like socks and shirts. Visit their site to check out their wide variety of Bamboo products.

I love reusable items! Kids Konserve Review & Coupon Code!

I am a big fan of reusable products. Not only because you aren't filling up landfills with ziplock bags, but because you can really get the most bang for your buck. I tried out the Kids Konserve Food Kozy which is one of their best sellers. Basically it replaces a ziplock sandwich bag. You can put a sandwich or whatever you want inside and wrap it up and it velcros shut. I put a sticky, gooey rice krispie bar in my Food Kozy and wrapped it up. I was pleased to see that it didn't even stick when I opened it back up again! The Food Kozy comes in a pack 5 for $25. Easy care-just rinse in the sink and air dry in minutes.

Kids Konserve offers a wide variety of products from lunch and party packs to stainless steel water bottles. Isn't the Lunch Kit below adorable? They offer 3 different designs and they sell for $42. You can buy these and many other products on their site at Kids Konserve. My readers will also get a 25% discount on the Food Kozy set of 5! Just enter code: Kozy25 to receive your discount! Fashionable and Affordable Bags for Every Woman. Gabbygale Handbag Review & Giveaway!

Friday, June 19, 2009 273

I have to admit I am a bit of a handbag junkie. When it comes to purses I love to accessorize my outfit and also make an outfit trendy with my handbag. I think accessories are an ideal way to make your wardrobe current and fashionable. I reviewed the Small Fashion Hobo in Brown. Would you believe it is only $21.99? I think that is an excellent price and the quality isn't compromised. I was surprised how soft the leather like material is and how nice the hardware looks on the bag. It definitely doesn't look or feel cheap.

The handbag has plenty of room for all my goodies (as moms we have many!) and has a zippered small pocket, cell phone pocket and additional pocket inside as well as a zippered pocket on the outside. Gabbygale Bags offers a large variety of purses as well as diaper bags, totes, wallets and much more.

If you are anything like me and like to have more than one handbag to choose from in your closet, Gabbygale Bags definitely offers the affordability and variety to fill up your closet. All of their items are under $35! Gabbygale Bags also offers $5 shipping on all orders and free shipping on orders over $50. They also offer same day shipping and a free coin purse with every order. Gabbygale Bags would also make a great gift for someone special! You can buy any of their bags on their site.

Finally a product that allows moms to "sleep when baby sleeps" without laying awake worrying about SIDS.

Thursday, June 18, 2009 333
As both a mother and a Registered Nurse I definitely hovered over my daughter's bassinet when she was a baby. I knew the dangers of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) and how little was know about what caused it. I always put her to sleep on her back and used sleep sacks instead of blankets, but I still worried that something terrible would happen while I slept. I'm sure any mother can relate to this feeling. A feeling of helplessness and not knowing if SIDS would affect your child.

I was elated to find the Babysense V Infant Movement Monitor. Now that I am expecting my second child I remember back to the many nights spent awake watching over my baby and I dread going through that again. Fortunately with the Babysense V I won't have to! The way that the Babsense V works is by monitoring your child's slightest movements. If your baby's movement stops for any reason the monitor will alert you within 20 seconds so you can be there to help your baby. It also alerts if your baby's movements (breathing) is irregularly slow.

I was a little worried that the monitor would have many false alarms being that babies tend to have very slight movements while breathing and sleeping. I was glad to find that this wasn't the case at all. The Babysense V is very sensitive to any movements. For this reason they also instruct you to do a Performance Test a least once daily to check for any interference from surrounding devices. Some things that the sensors may detect as movement include fans, mobiles and such things that generate movement. The following video is a little longer than most videos I post, but I found it to be very informative both on SIDS and the Babysense V's role in protecting your baby.

The Babysense V monitor comes with two sensor pads (shown under mattress in picture below). You use a single sensor pad when your child is an infant and add the second sensor pad when your child begins to roll over and scoot around (usually around 3 months). The Babysense V is suitable for infants up to one year old, when the risk of SIDS decreases dramatically.

Babysense V operates on AA batteries and is not plugged in to the wall to prevent any risk to your baby. All of the cords are under the mattress and able to be kept out of reach of the child. I installed this on my daughter's crib (she is just over 1 year old) and she didn't even know it was there. She never found any cords to grab. The Babysense V worked excellent and never sounded a false alarm during my review period (a little over a week). This product truly offers inexpensive peace of mind allowing you to get the sleep you need to take care of your baby. It works out to cost about 36 cents a day when used for the first year of your baby's life!

Babysense V retails for $129.95 and can be purchased on the Baby Safe site as well as several online retailers (list here). You can also purchase a Babysense V at Sears, Babies R Us, Buy Buy Baby, Bed Bath and Beyond and destination Baby. My readers can use code: BSVSF152009 which will give you $20 off a Babysense V when purchased directly from their site!

Win a Babysense V Infant Movement Monitor! Baby Safe is offering one lucky reader a chance to win a Babysense V of their own.

Here is how to enter to win:

  • Visit Baby Safe and tell me one of their other products you like AND tell me who the Babysense V would be used for if you won. These must BOTH be done to win! Remember to include your email address in your comment.
