Make breastfeeding easy with Medela

Tuesday, August 31, 2010 8

I am a huge breastfeeding advocate. It began long before I started nursing my first baby when I worked as an RN in the labor and delivery unit at a big hospital. I helped new mamas of preemies and full term infants learn to nurse their babies. We worked side by side with our many lactation consultants on staff to help moms learn the art of nursing their babies and how easy it can be once you learn. We dealt with many difficult situations but with some tips, tricks and good advice were able to help many moms get past those difficult first few days of feeding. Now I am nursing my second child and have found it to be a very rewarding and wonderful experience. I know this isn't always the case for mamas and Medela is here to make breastfeeding as easy and convenient for you as possible.

I was given the opportunity to host a Medela mommy party and I am so excited about it. I currently use their Freestyle pump and absolutely love it. I use it whenever I leave Aiden and it works wonderfully! I love the timer display and battery so I don't need to find an outlet.

I have heard so many wonderful things about the Pump In Style breastpump and received one to share at the party. The Pump In Style is a double electric breastpump and offers some great features:
  • Adjustable speed/vacuum dial lets mom choose her most comfortable setting.
  • Removable PVC-free cooler bag with contoured ice pack keeps milk cool for up to 12 hours.
  • Battery pack lets mom pump anywhere, anytime. (Optional 9V vehicle lighter adapter available).
  • More milk in less time with 2-Phase Expression® technology when pumping at Maximum Comfort Vacuum™.
  • Everything included in an attractive PVC-free microfiber bag for fast and easy pumping.
    Helpful storage pockets for organization.
  • Convenient integrated work surface for mom.
  • Double pumping kit includes PersonalFit™ breastshields.

I also had the opportunity to test out some of Medela's other great nursing products for the party and I want to share more about some of my favorites with you!

First of all I really loved their disposable nursing pads. They really absorb a good amount of milk so you don't go through many of them throughout the day which in the end saves you money. I liked the Contouring pleats which made them conform better to the breast so they weren't so obvious under my clothes. They are each individually wrapped which makes them easy to toss in the diaper bag or your purse when you are on the go. Since they are wrapped you know they are clean when you need to use them. They also have an adhesive back if you want to stick them in place so they don't move around.

Medela's Tender Care Lanolin is a product that I would have used all the time the first month or so of nursing. Lanolin is a godsend and really helps relieve sore nipples. Nursing isn't supposed to hurt but what they don't tell you is that the first couple of weeks to a month or so is really painful as your nipples get used to it. When baby latches on they are very sore! Medela's Lanolin is awesome and I recommend picking some up before you deliver!

Medela also has these great Tender Care Hydrogel Pads that cool on contact. They offer great relief for sore nipples and can be reused up to 24 hours. If you are having a baby, have a newborn or know someone who does then get these! Trust me you will love them.
Do you have a microwave and water? If you do then you can easily steam clean your pumping parts, bottles, pacifiers and more with Medela's Quick Clean Micro Steam Bags. I love the ease of use with these. They work wonderfully for cleaning your pumping parts and then I just leave them in the bag for the next time I use it. Since I only use my pump when I leave Aiden with a sitter then I know they will still be clean by the time I use it. I love these. The best part is, you can use each bag up to 20 times!

When you are pumping you need somewhere to store all that precious milk that you save and Medela has you covered there too! Their Pump & Save Breastmilk Bags are perfect for storing your milk in whether you refrigerate it or freeze it. They easily stand up and also zip shut.
And here is one of my favorite products of theirs! I am in love with these Quick Clean Wipes. When I am out and about (or finally on a date with hubby) and I am pumping chances are that I am not near a sink with soap and water to easily clean my pump. Medela has these great quick clean wipes which work to clean your pump without soap and water! And just one wipe cleans both breastshields, valves & membranes! I love them!

So as you can see Medela makes breastfeeding at home or away an easy job. Yes, I said job. Breastfeeding is a labor of love for me (most of the time) and any tools I can get that will make it easier are a wonderful help. I highly recommend going out and trying these great Medela products.

Pros:
Ease of use, great quality, makes the job of nursing easier on mama!

Cons:
I really liked all of the Medela products and Medela is a name that both I and my friends have come to trust.

Toddler Tuesday! Saying goodbye to a friend

Welcome to Toddler Tuesday! This is where you can link up all of your toddler related activities, ideas, memories and more. We want to see what you are doing with your toddlers and get some great ideas! You can grab the Toddler Tuesday button on my sidebar!

We had a really fun BBQ this past weekend with our best friends. They are the Godparents of our children and we are the Godparents of theirs. It is so wonderful because we all get along so well. Danika is best buddies with their daughter too. I am so sad because they have to leave for 6+ months for a job. They will be coming back which I am very glad about but it was so hard to see them go!

I couldn't bear to tell Danika that she wouldn't see her friend for a very long time. How do you explain that to a toddler who doesn't have a grasp on time yet? I didn't want to make her as sad as I was. I will miss our friends very much and I'm not sure yet what I'm going to tell Danika when she asks to go play with her friend. I hate these mommy moments!

Now it is your turn to link up! If you don’t have a blog then leave it in the comments. Tell us all about your toddler activities!

See Kai Run Review & Giveaway!

Of all of the shoes we have tried on our kids (and we have tried many) See Kai Run are by far my favorites. Not only are they adorable but they are really well made and comfortable for the kids. I was really excited to see their new Fall/Winter line and the cute styles they've added to the See Kai Run family.

Danika received these adorable Kai shoes in Pink. I love the color combo and style. They are so cute and Danika loves them too. They are really soft and comfortable. I love the faux laces that give the shoe a sporty look with the ease of velcro to put them on quickly. They are handcrafted from butter-soft leather and have a Flexible rubber sole. I love that See Kai Run's soft soles are healthy for developing feet but sturdy enough for outdoor play. Danika's previous pair that she outgrew stood up to a lot of tough play and are still in great condition.

Danika has had so many pairs of See Kai Run shoes and they are the pair we always reach for. Aiden had an adorable pair of shoes from their Smaller line too and he wore them a ton. He just outgrew them and I'm so sad! We got so many compliments on them.

Head on over to See Kai Run and check out all of their adorable styles. They have shoes to fit from baby to kids!

Pros:
durable, well made, high quality, adorable, flexible soles

Cons:
At around $40 they may be more than you usually spend on shoes for your kids. I have to say though that Danika wore her last pair almost every day for a very long time and they held up so well. You will get your money's worth in the end.

Buy It!
You can buy all of See Kai Run's adorable styles right on their site!

Go Diego Go: Diego's Ultimate Rescue League on dvd today!

Go Diego Go: Diego's Ultimate Rescue League is available on dvd today (August 31st)! Danika is a huge Dora fan but also likes Diego and I can see already that when Aiden is a little bit older he will love Diego.

Diego and his friends test their rescuing skills as they travel underwater and up tall mountains to save animals in the three new-to-DVD episodes featured on Go, Diego, Go!: Diego’s Ultimate Rescue League. In these action-packed expeditions around the world, preschoolers can join the Animal Rescue League as they help Diego and his friends undergo a test to earn a World Rescuers’ patch; help Bottlenose become an ocean animal rescuer by saving the ocean animals from a tsunami-like wave and a devastating oil spill; and climb a treacherous mountain to reunite Prince Vicuña with his parents. The DVD includes the double-length Ultimate Rescue League episode, in addition to two more action-packed Diego episodes.

Go, Diego, Go!: Diego’s Ultimate Rescue League Episode Synopses:

Diego’s International Rescue League
Diego has assembled an elite team of world rescuers to endure a challenging test that will earn them their World Rescuers’ patch. Diego’s team includes Juma – the African desert expert, Shanti – the Indian forest expert, Burgin – an expert diver and surfer from Borneo, Yang – a panda rescuer who can climb up the tallest and most treacherous mountains of China, and team captain Diego – who’s rescued animals from every corner of the globe – even the frozen tundra of Antarctica! The team assembles on Rescue Island, where they must race against the clock in their Rescue-Flyer to identify and return five mystery animal eggs to their respective habitats before time runs out.

Ocean Animal Rescuer
Bottlenose wants to become an ocean animal rescuer just like Diego and Baby Humpback Whale. Bottlenose must swim fast and rescue the baby sea turtles from a giant wave that could devastate the population. Then Diego, Baby Humpback, and Bottlenose must work together to rescue the ocean animals from a dangerous oil-spill before it gets too close to their natural habitats.

Diego Rescues Prince Vicuña
Prince Vicuña embarked on an extensive exploration and has yet to return to his parents, the King and Queen, who long for their lost son. Diego and Messenger Vicuña are quick to develop a plan of action. Diego and Messenger Vicuña run into some trouble as they realize the Prince is over the mountain, near Puma Pass. Diego decides to use a special climbing hook and rope to climb up the mountain toward Puma Pass to rescue the Prince. After a successful rescue, we take the Prince back to Vicuña Valley, and reunite him with his joyful parents.

Buy It! Deigo will delight any little guy and you can get it wherever dvds are sold for the suggested retail price of $16.99. You can also get it on Amazon for just $12.99!

Anytime Costumes Review & Giveaway!!

Fall is almost here and that means the hunt for the cutest costumes for Halloween is on! I love the huge selection that Anytime Costumes has so I couldn't wait to browse their selection of baby and toddler costumes this year. Last year Danika dressed up as Snow White (look how little she was!) in their costume and it was a huge hit. This year she was over the moon to get to dress up as Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz! She loves the Wizard of Oz and was so excited to get a Dorothy costume.

Now we just need to get the ruby red slippers! She loved the little basket with toto in it. She carries it everywhere. It really completes the outfit too.

The costume comes with a big blue bow too which is really adorable in her hair. For Halloween we will pick up a pair of white tights to keep her warm and look for some ruby red slippers!

We couldn't leave out Aiden! I absolutely love dressing up babies because they are so darn cute. I couldn't resist this adorable Lil' Monster costume! Isn't is just the cutest thing you've ever seen? I love it! It is very appropriate for Aiden right now too because he is into everything!

It comes in a size 12-18 months which looked really big on the hanger and I was worried because he is only 8 months old (will be 10 mos by Halloween), but when I put it on him it fit great with room to grow. It wasn't too baggy. It comes with the monster head piece and monster booties which are great to keep their feet warm while out trick or treating! The hand pieces are part of the sleeve which is perfect because I know he wouldn't want to keep them on if they were a separate piece. It also has a snap bottom for easy diaper changes which I was thrilled about! Who wants to completely undress their baby to change the diaper? They really got it right with the Lil' Monster costume!

Pros:
Adorable costumes, great selection, fun accessories like the toto in a basket really complete the look. Affordable and very friendly customer service. They also have free shipping on all orders of $50 or more!

Cons:
The Lil' Monster costume was definitely better quality than the Dorothy dress but the price also reflects that.

Buy It!
You can buy the Dorothy Costume for just $19.99 and the Toto in a Basket for $12.50. The Lil Monster costume is on sale for $49.99. Both of these costumes and tons more including baby, toddler, child and adult costumes are available on Anytime Costumes site!

Do your kids get enough essential fatty acids?

I love fish. I haven't been able to eat a whole lot of it in the past few years because I've been pregnant or breastfeeding and while there are guidelines to be able to eat it I tend to forgo it because I feel safer than trying to sort through what I can and can't eat safely.

We recently went fishing on Lake Superior and my husband caught a nice lake trout. We battered it with Shore Lunch and ate it and it was so delicious. Danika loved it too and it made me realize that I really don't feed her fish very often either since I'm not consuming much of it myself.
Recent research has shown that essential fatty acids (EFAs) play an important role in our children's development. Getting Danika to eat fish 2-3 times a week is pretty much impossible for me. Fish oil supplements offer an effective alternative, but the accompanying fishy taste and questions of purity often prevent kids from taking them on a regular basis. With Ascenta's new NutraSea Kids supplement, I can provide Danika essential fatty acids with a great Very Berry taste and Pure Check quality assurance. I know she wouldn't be able to swallow soft gels or capsules so NutraSea Kids' liquid format makes easy to take. I also love that I can add into smoothies, yogurt and juice. She only needs to take 1 teaspoon a day so it is such a small amount.

Her daily does give her omega-3 and vitaminD which are great for healthy development. It is recommended for children ages 2-13. The Pure Check logo featured on all NutraSea products guarantees that they have been independently tested and certified for quality, purity and potency — a level of quality that sets Ascenta apart from its from competitors. You can even view the quality test results for your product by entering the lot number located on your bottle on the Pure Check box at the left of the screen on their web site. I love the transparency of that!

They also have adult supplements which my husband has been taking. You can check out all of their products on their site. I know with everything I've heard about the importance of essential fatty acids I'm glad that I can safely give Danika a supplement so she can reap all of the benefits of them. Do your kids get enough essential fatty acids? How often do you eat fish?

Prince Lionheart Whirl Balance Scooter Review & Giveaway!

Friday, August 27, 2010 860

Every time Danika hears a motorcycle go by our house she makes sure to announce it to everyone. My hubby had a motorcycle and sold it after we had Danika. She loves to talk about how Daddy had a motorcycle. When I saw the Prince Lionheart Whirl Balance Scooter I knew it would be right up her alley.

Prince Lionheart’s whirl balance SCOOTER™ will teach your child how to balance which is a crucial skill necessary before transitioning to a two-wheeled pedal bicycle. Danika has her ride on toys which she has mastered but before we put her on a bike with training wheels we wanted her to learn how to balance. If we just gave her a bike with training wheels she wouldn't learn this skill for a long time.

She is a peanut and short so she couldn't quite reach the ground while sitting on the seat. She loved to walk with the bike though and really got the hang of it quickly. She will fit on the seat in no time.

She tipped over once, bound to happen while learning to balance, and she was able to easily pick the scooter back up all by herself. It isn't too heavy which I really like. Your child will start off walking and then soon be gliding and without even realizing it they will learn the skill of balancing!

The Whirl Scooter is made from 100% birch frame from an FSC certified forest. It is designed to mimic a pink motor scooter and is perfect for your chic little girl.

The Whirl has solid rubber handgrips and is meant for children ages 2-5 years old.

The Whirl has a height adjustable, padded seat and 12 inch rubber tires. It was really easy to assemble with just three easy steps.

Here is my girl on the bike :)

Pros:
Adorable, sassy but chic, durable, lightweight, easy for your child to learn the skill of balance.

Cons:
It is meant for ages 2-5 but Danika is still too short for it. It would be great if the seat went a little lower. I will admit that Danika is small for her age though.

Buy It!
You can buy the Prince Lionheart Whirl Scooter for $110 on their site. You can also locate online retailers and in stores listed here.

Prince Lionheart also has the Chop balanceBike which is the boy counterpart to the Whirl balanceScooter. Both were just awarded the 2010 Preferred Choice Award and Top Toy!!
