Internet Options for Rural Areas, My Struggle!

Friday, January 27, 2012

When we moved to the country I couldn't wait to have privacy and solitude. This is my yard! We have 10 acres and it's absolutely awesome. To be able to go out in my yard and play with the kids and not have my neighbor come over to see what we were doing is heaven for me. Now don't get me wrong, it's not that I don't like people. I just like my privacy. I want to be able to run around the yard with my kids and not have to talk with my four neighbors that each come over to chat meanwhile my kids are hollering for me to come play with them instead of talking. I was raised in the country and that is where my hear is. Hey, I gave living in town a good try. We lived in town for 6 years and it just wasn't my cup of tea.

One convenience of town that I definitely miss was affordable, reliable high speed Internet. I didn't really realize how hard it would be to find a high speed Internet provider in the country. It's not like I was looking for dedicated internet, all I wanted was high speed Internet for my personal use! After giving Hughes Net satellite Internet a try and banging my head against the wall at the slow speeds and horrible customer service, I gave up on them. After researching my options it seemed the only way I was going to get decent Internet at a bearable speed was to get a wireless MyFi device. We ended up getting one and the Internet is great. I love that I have high speed Internet again. My two complaints about this option are that it's pricey ($80/month) and the data is limited (10 GB/month). With how much time I spend online blogging, uploading pics, videos, etc you'd be surprised at how quickly 10 GB goes in a month. That means no catching up on missed TV shows by watching them on the Internet because it takes up too much data. It's frustrating to have to watch my data use each month and faithfully connect and disconnect each time I leave the computer.

I'm anxiously patiently waiting on the day they run fiber optic cable past my house so I can get DSL or some form of affordable, unlimited high speed Internet. Hey Quest, are you reading this?? Hurry up please :)

Luckily thanks to our Wilson DT Cell Booster I don't have to worry about my cell phones not working so I don't need xo voip services or anything crazy like that to make a phone call but please someone send some high speed Internet my way :)

Are you living in a rural area? What do you do for Internet?

Ugh I remember that struggle! We used dial up for the longest time. (Luckily this was before I was a blogger, BUT we lived in FL and family was in IL so I liked to upload a lot of photos for them.) I thought about trying the satellite option but had only heard bad things. They didn't have mifi then. I had to deal with dial up until I got DSL. I couldn't wait!

My husband keeps trying to convince me to live in a rural place. His dream is to own a home in a nice rural area for the same reasons as you. I've always lived in a townhouse/ apt setting so I might feel a bit separated from the conveinence of being a block away from stores or my side of the family, but I think I and so many others can probably relate to wanting some space and privacy for your own family just to yourself. I sometimes wish I could be in control of knowing when someone was going to drop by or knock on my door. Being in the country does sound nice, but yes, my husband is a computer tech for a living and I love the internet as well so going from cable internet to sattelite would be frustrating.

Wow...I probably would never have thought of that struggle if I were to pack up and move to a more rural area.

I love your backyard! I love the idea of isolation and privacy.

DSL, generally, doesn't work if you are more than a mile away from a phone company switch... If your house is less than one mile away from the switch, it works fine... If not...

There is no big 'upside' for telephone companies to install switches in rural areas with less dense populations. Although, they have to put switches in every so often,. Before I bought the very rural house I used to live in, the first thing I asked the realtor was whether I could get high speed internet. He didn't know, but I drove around for a while and found a switch that was less than a mile away from me.

BTW, how long does it take to mow your yard????

We don't live in a rural area (although I would LOVE to) ... unlike you, I don't like most people and would be content with no neighbors :) ... but I don't think I could give up my cable internet for it.

Sarah

It takes a couple hours on a rider to mow it but we don't mow all 10 acres :) We leave most of it to grow long and let them hay it, we just mow around the house.

@Cat you crack me up lol

I live in Atlanta so I don't have a problem with internet service. I do have a relative that lives in rural New York and can't get high speed as an option. She has to do dial up!

We live out in the country too and struggle with the no options for internet problem. We know people that live 2 miles away that get high speed internet so HOPEFULLY soon they will get it to our house!

I would LOVE to live in a rural area, instead of a big city (as I do), but I never considered the technology issues. I still think it would be worth it... your open space, the view, the clouds... ahhhh.

Wow! I would love to have such a great big yard, but then again I don't think I could give up my cable internet. I never thought of the struggle of living in a rural area.

I would love to live in a rural area but I also cant beat the 3 min drive to every thing I could possibly want!!! But atleast you have some fast internet now!

We used to have Hughes internet too, can I say enough bad things about them??? They are an absolute LAST RESORT. Thankfully , Frontier finally extended DSL out to our place, we were on the very edge and still had occasional outages, but it was soooo much better. There are some other satellite internet companies, did you ever check into them?
