We used to have Hughes internet too, can I say enough bad things about them??? They are an absolute LAST RESORT. Thankfully , Frontier finally extended DSL out to our place, we were on the very edge and still had occasional outages, but it was soooo much better. There are some other satellite internet companies, did you ever check into them?

DSL, generally, doesn't work if you are more than a mile away from a phone company switch... If your house is less than one mile away from the switch, it works fine... If not...

There is no big 'upside' for telephone companies to install switches in rural areas with less dense populations. Although, they have to put switches in every so often,. Before I bought the very rural house I used to live in, the first thing I asked the realtor was whether I could get high speed internet. He didn't know, but I drove around for a while and found a switch that was less than a mile away from me.

BTW, how long does it take to mow your yard????

My husband keeps trying to convince me to live in a rural place. His dream is to own a home in a nice rural area for the same reasons as you. I've always lived in a townhouse/ apt setting so I might feel a bit separated from the conveinence of being a block away from stores or my side of the family, but I think I and so many others can probably relate to wanting some space and privacy for your own family just to yourself. I sometimes wish I could be in control of knowing when someone was going to drop by or knock on my door. Being in the country does sound nice, but yes, my husband is a computer tech for a living and I love the internet as well so going from cable internet to sattelite would be frustrating.

Ugh I remember that struggle! We used dial up for the longest time. (Luckily this was before I was a blogger, BUT we lived in FL and family was in IL so I liked to upload a lot of photos for them.) I thought about trying the satellite option but had only heard bad things. They didn't have mifi then. I had to deal with dial up until I got DSL. I couldn't wait!
